Gemini Science Archive Help: Proprietary Data Access and Control

Important

To access any links under the GSA "Proprietary Data Access" menu you MUST have a CADC account. Use the CADC registration page to request one. Note also that CADC account creation is NOT an automated process. CADC operations staff review each new account request during regular business hours, approximately 9AM to 5PM, Monday to Friday.

Accessing Proprietary Data: Gemini Principal Investigators

Gemini PIs use their Gemini Phase II Observing Tool (OT) database access password to grant themselves access to proprietary science (and calibration) data for each of their science programs. To do so, select the Access your PI Data link under the "Proprietary Data Access" menu. For each science program enter the Gemini Program ID (e.g. GS-2006A-C-4) and the Phase II password in the form provided at the top of the page and click the "Submit" button. If you entered the correct password for the program the page will refresh and the science program will now appear in the two list boxes shown below the input form. You may immediately search for data from the science program by selecting the appropriate program in the list to the left and clicking either the "List datasets" or "View Packages" button.

You may now also use the various search pages provided at the bottom of the page or under the "Proprietary Data Access" menu to carry out a normal GSA search; with these proprietary searches any proprietary data you have access to will have "mark" buttons highlighted in green. (If you had used a form in the public "GSA Queries" menu the proprietary data would not be retrievable.)

Important note: the CADC does NOT provide access to Gemini Phase II passwords. This program-specific password was sent to you at the time your Phase II template was made available, subsequent to your proposal being awarded observing time. If you do not have this password please e-mail your Gemini contact scientist and he/she will send it to you.

Controlling Access to Your Proprietary PI Data

There are two ways for PIs to grant access to data for a specific Gemini science program.

The recommended approach is to add individual co-investigators (Co-Is) to membership groups you, as PI, control for each of your GSA-registered science programs. First, you must ask your Co-Is to provide you with their CADC usernames. Once you have that information, enter the Access your PI Data page, select the desired Gemini science program from the selection list on the right of the page in the "Program ID's for which you are the PI" box and click the "View Membership" button. In this membership control page simply enter a CADC Username and click the "Add Member" button for each Co-I. If that user now enters the GSA PI access page he/she will see the appropriate science program in the access list to the left of the page. Note: you may also remove a Co-I's access to your data by following the above steps to enter the membership control page, select the desired group member and click on the "Delete Member" button.

A less flexible and less secure (but, until release 1.75 of the GSA, only) method to enable Co-Is direct access to proprietary data is to simply provide each Co-I with the Phase II password for the appropriate science program. That Co-I will then effectively become another program PI by entering the science program/password in the PI Access page just as a normal PI does. Note: this method provides no means to remove the Co-I's access to your data and enables her/him to grant access to these data to other CADC users.

Accessing Proprietary Data: Gemini Co-Investigators

To obtain access to proprietary Gemini data you must contact the PI of the science program in question. If you provide the PI with your CADC username then she/he can quite readily grant you access to data for that program by following the instructions above. Once such access has been granted, enter the Access your PI Data page and you should find the science program listed in the "Program ID's for which you have authorized access" box on the left of the page.

If instead the PI has sent you the Phase II password for the science program, follow the instructions at the top of this page. You then effectively become a PI for that program.
